What Are Alternative Fuels?We define "high heat content" alternative fuels as having a heat content greater than that of the poorest quality fuels such as wood or peat. These types of fuels typically have heating values of greater than 5,000 BTU/lb and include such diverse materials as scrap paper, cardboard, agricultural by-products, sawdust, wood scrap or wood chips, scrap cloth, plastic or tires or even leather or upholstery scraps. We have even designed a system to use dried chicken manure as a fuel. In fact, virtually any dry, high heat content material may be fired in a Thermal Dynamix LoCAF(c) system.
It's important to note that we don't characterize the Thermal Dynamix LoCAF system as an incinerator. Because the objective of an incinerator is to simply reduce volume as quickly as possible, without regard to heat content of the material being incinerated, it may be necessary to use additional fuel in an incinerator to supply heat to support the combustion of whatever is being burned.
The purpose of the LoCAF system is to convert and extract as much heat as possible from a given dry fuel ("dry" is the operative term). Since there's not much heat content in garbage it's a very poor "fuel".
Although the technology is derived from the incineration process, the LoCAF system is far more sophisticated, better controlled and instrumented, more heavily insulated and quieter in operation than an incinerator.
It's probably useful to note here that our LoCAF system actually WILL burn rubbish but it needs to be reasonably dry. The economic justification comes from being able to use virtually any reasonably dry combustible material as a fuel. The fact that you may be able to reduce your waste disposal costs is an added benefit.
